The room every student wants to visit

There's a new room at Pawnee Elementary, and it has quickly become the one students ask about by name. The new STEM lab is officially open, and the excitement is real, with kids counting down to their turn every week. It's bright, it's a little loud, and it's exactly the kind of place where students learn best: by doing.

For a district our size, a dedicated STEM space is a big deal. Here's a look at what's in the room, how it got here, and what our students are actually learning between all the beeping and building.

So what's inside?

The short list: a 3D printer humming away in the corner, a set of robotics kits, and a whole shelf of microscopes that actually work this time. There's building material, circuit sets, and measuring tools sized for smaller hands.

The crowd favorite? A full wall the students get to draw on with dry-erase markers. We call it regulated chaos, and it might be the most-used tool in the room. Turns out, giving kids permission to write on the walls is a surprisingly effective way to get them thinking out loud.

How the lab came to be

The lab was built over winter break using funds from the 2024 capital bond that Pawnee voters approved, plus a matching equipment grant from the Sweetums Foundation. That's local support turned into something students touch every single day, and a good reminder that school budgets aren't abstract when you can see them in a 3D printer.

It also came together thanks to a lot of people: teachers who wrote wish lists, staff who spent their break assembling tables, and community members who donated supplies. A room like this is a group project in the truest sense.

First class through the door

The honor of the very first session went to Mrs. Patel's 4th grade. According to Mrs. Patel, they built circuits before they'd even taken their coats off. Nobody had to be talked into participating, and nobody wanted to leave when the bell rang.

That's the reaction we were hoping for. When students are this eager, the learning takes care of itself.

More than gadgets

It would be easy to think a STEM lab is about the equipment. It isn't. The real lesson is how to think: ask a question, try something, watch it fail, and try again. Students learn to build a hypothesis, test it, and adjust, the same habits scientists and engineers use every day.

It's also teaching teamwork. A robotics kit doesn't get built by one kid working alone, and figuring out who does what is half the fun.
